What do fibroblast’s and their friends need for Collagenesis?

We have already discussed that the fibroblast is one of the main players in the production of collagen, elastin and GAG’s. Plasma treatment initiates that important “micro trauma” or injury to the cells, starting off the healing cycle. However, this injury can also deplete the cells of the resources needed to repair and rebuild. Once they have been injured the body must be able to provide particular nutrients to regulate the optimum function of the fibroblast…and of course their friends.

Collagen is the primary protein constituent of the connective tissue; it’s what makes up the complex weave of the skin, maintaining structure and giving support.
Vitamin C “ascorbic acid” helps your body to form tissues. Blood vessels, muscle tissue and collagen. It aids in healing.

Vitamin C specifically increases type 1 and type 3 pro-collagen messenger RNA levels in fibroblasts. Studies have been carried out on the effect of vitamin C on fibroblast cells in vitro. When adequate amounts of vitamin C are missing, total synthesis of collagen is decreased. Vitamin C interacts with the amino acids in collagen, adding hydrogen and oxygen to them aiding collagen production. Simply put – if you do not have enough vitamin C to help this process, then collagen production will be slower.

We cannot produce vitamin C naturally. In the developed world vitamin C deficiencies are uncommon, but increasing or boosting the bodies levels of vitamin C whilst we are hoping for collagen production and healing is a worthwhile cause. From our diet vitamin C can be found in leafy greens, fruits and vegetables. A vitamin C supplement is the ideal way to boost or maintain the bodies levels after plasma treatment.
